A few months back it was revealed that Facebook’s Trending topics were curated and tweaked by a group of people. Within that controversy, it was alleged that Facebook was suppressing conservative views.
Late last week, Facebook announced that it would be eliminating the human element of trending news and moving to an algorithm-only solution.
The algorithm did not get off to a good start. Over the weekend, the fully automated Facebook trending module pushed out a false story about Fox News host Megyn Kelly, a controversial piece about a comedian’s four-letter word attack on right-wing pundit Ann Coulter, and links to an article about a video of a man masturbating with a McDonald’s chicken sandwich.
Facebook says the automated solution will allow for trending to operate at a greater scale long term.
