CNN Starting New Media Brand with YouTuber Casey Neistat

Last week, we saw celebrity vlogger Casey Neistat announcing he was shutting down his popular daily video series.

CNN announced this morning it acquired Neistat’s app, Beme, along with his 11-person team. The deal is valued at $25 million dollars according to the Wall Street Journal.

In the announcement, CNN announced it will shut down Beme and allow Neistat to create a new project to attract his online followers to the media company. According to The New York Times, Neistat will have full creative control to build a separate company that lets the audience share “timely and topical videos” and start conversations around current events.

The launch is slated for summer 2017 and will operate as a standalone media property similar to CNN’s company Great Big Story.
