Facebook Steps Up Its Fake News Battle

Facebook announced this morning that it will begin barring Pages that repeatedly share news verified as false from advertising on the platform.

It became widely accepted that false news may have impacted the U.S. presidential election and Facebook was a primary channel used in its distribution. While somewhat reluctant at first, Facebook has started to take the fight on.

In a blog post, Facebook said they are working to fight the spread of false news in three key areas:

  1. Disrupting the economic incentives to create false news
  2. Building new products to curb the spread of false news
  3. Helping people make more informed decisions when they encounter false news
This advertising ban is aimed at #1. It is not permanent as of now. Pages will be allowed to advertise again if they “stop sharing false news.”
