"Oh, all my married friends say that the way we live sounds ideal and we shouldn’t change a thing."

Meatless Burger Wars - Impossible vs. Beyond
By: Emily Menken

If you’ve been craving a burger with a little ethics, Burger King is rolling out their new Impossible Whopper at Bay Area locations. Mimicking the actions of other fast food chains, Burger King has jumped on the fake meat bandwagon with the hefty goal to have the Impossible Whopper at all their 7,200 restaurants by end of this year. The trial period (in St Louis area BKs) saw an 18 percent higher foot traffic than the chain’s national average.

Impossible Burgers, based out of Redwood City, recently received $300 million in funding, with celebrity investors like Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Serena Williams, and Trevor Noah, making it the best funded alternative protein startup to date. Impossible Burger’s mission is to eliminate the need for animals over the next 16 years with a better-than-the-real-thing vegetable patty.

Burger King’s release made major news headlines yesterday, and with the speediness of a one-two punch, Beyond Meat retaliated with a new release - a “meatier” patty that changes from red to brown while you cook it. Beyond Meat is available at retailers like Whole Foods, Target, plus chains like Del Taco, Qdoba, TGI Friday’s, and Carl’s Jr.

While Impossible Burgers will need to grow to catch up to match Beyond Meat’s nationwide success, it’s looking like a competitive race.

Apple Sets The New Standard In Privacy
By: Sergio Saucedo

Last week at the annual WWDC event, Apple announced that they would be providing their own app sign-on service that allows users more control over their contact information. The announcement was timely, given all the recent privacy and security scandals surrounding some of the larger tech giants.

The service would serve as an alternative to the Facebook sign-in that most apps currently use but would provide a couple of unique features:

  • Allow users to share their authentic email addresses or cloaked ones with any app they join.

  • Allow users to deactivate their email connection to a marketer

This new feature would hinder CRM initiatives and targeting capabilities that rely on a brand’s email list, which can be helpful in identifying the right users across platforms.

Apple will start forcing app developers to integrate this new feature moving forward as it sets its eyes on making it available starting in the fall.

Together with Aaron Magness, Brandless CMO, they will be discussing how companies are building new brands for today’s conscious, modern consumer. Check them out if you are attending.
During the 1975 NBA Finals, Golden State played its home games at the Cow Palace in San Francisco because the Oakland Arena was booked. The Cow Palace was not available for certain days during the series, and that forced an unusual 1-2-2-1-1 format.
