“It’s not out of cockiness. I’ve won five world titles and if I say, ‘I’m the best gymnast there is,’ (the reaction is) ‘Oh, she’s cocky. Look at her now.’ No, the facts are literally on the paper.”

- Simone Biles, G.O.A.T, winning her fifth all-around world title in addition to another four gold medals, making her the winningest gymnast on a world level

Spacing Out: Travel-Friendly Space Gear
By: Emily Menken

On Wednesday morning, Under Armour and Virgin Galactic unveiled the world’s first commercial space suit and footwear, the result of a two-year brand partnership.

Under Armour is well-known in the athletic apparel realm, particularly for their Research and Development efforts. The brand’s Baltimore, MD campus is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories; there, Under Armour has developed innovations in gear for various types of work-outs and climate conditions, like the Recharge compression suit designed to reduce fatigue and soreness after exercise. Released in 2009, that technology has been adapted by countless athletic apparel companies.

But designing a space suit is a different brief: space travel is even more extreme and high-intensity than CrossFit. The blue and gold suit consists of a base layer, flight suit, and boots with fabric that temperature-regulates and enhances blood flow during zero G flights.

The state-of-the-art apparel allows travellers to enjoy their experience in space without concern for safety or mobility. The jumpsuits come with a ticket aboard the starship Enterprise, which will set space tourists back by $250k.

Richard Branson says, “I think the whole experience of going to space should be sexy. Our spaceships are sexy. Our mother ships are sexy. Our spaceport is sexy. And for younger people than myself, this suit is also sexy.”

Under Armour Founder and CEO Kevin Plank says, “Spaceflight is a unique and demanding regime and requires a different approach. What we've engineered utilizing our key technologies will define the future of spacewear and puts us at the forefront of this history-making event."

The Latest Podcast insights
By Sergio Saucedo

BBC’s branded content division, StoryWorks recently commissioned a study to further understand podcast listening behaviors. The study looked at individuals with household income of $100K+ who self identify as ad avoided. Their research showed that:

  • Listeners were 16% more engaged when hearing a brand podcast than when they were listening to other podcast content.

  • If they listened to a branded podcast they had a 12% higher likelihood of brand recall.

  • 94% of podcast listeners do other things while tuning in.

The study’s findings are of particular interest because brands are constantly looking for effective mediums to break through the noise given the amount of choice that customers have at their fingertips. Of course, podcasts as a medium still has a long way to go given that they still do not have a robust analytics and measurement infrastructure to provide advertisers; however, the popularity of the medium among users and research is showing that when users click the play button they are really tuning in.

Society is Going Dark (Mode)
By: Natalie Chaney

The easiest way to know you’re living in 2019? When technology & seemingly minute social platform settings have become the next big thing.

Instagram’s addition of the dark-mode feature, which works in tandem with Apple’s newest iOS update released just days before, has become a popular topic on social. In addition to Instagram’s recent release, YouTube and Twitter have both released their own Dark Modes over the past couple of months.

Though the internet quickly responded to these updates in *true* internet fashion (turning it into a meme), the new looks actually come with a lot of benefits. Dark Mode is said to conserve battery life, and also reduce eye strain, effectively making it easier for people to do what it is they truly want to do (look at more memes).

Read more about the pros and cons of the infamous Dark Mode here.

Tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. For those of us living in the Bay Area, the anniversary is a good reminder we are in an active earthquake zone.
